A Wet Film Thickness (WFT) Gauge, often called a wet film comb, notched gauge, or mil gauge, is a tool used to measure the thickness of a freshly applied liquid coating (like paint, varnish, resin, or adhesive) before it dries or cures.
Types of WFT Gauges While the comb or notched gauge is the most common, other types exist:
Notched/Comb Gauges : Most popular, inexpensive, and easy to use. Available in stainless steel (reusable) or plastic (often disposable). They are suitable for a wide range of coatings.
Wet Film Wheels (Rolling Gauges) : These gauges consist of two outer eccentric wheels and a center measuring wheel. They are rolled over the wet film. The thickness is determined by the point at which the center wheel touches the wet film. They are generally more precise than comb gauges and are also used on moving substrates, such as in coil coating.
Pfund and Interchemical Gauges : These use a microscope to measure the diameter of an impression left in the wet film by a spherical or flat-bottomed device, providing high accuracy on smooth surfaces.

The WET FILM THICKNESS GAUGE is to measure the ink's wet film thickness. The gauge is made by 3 rings. The center ring is smaller than the outer 2 rings and is eccentric so that when it is rolled on a wet paint, the operator can read the scale when the center ring touches the painted surface.
