No.274 PUMMEL TESTER

A PUMMEL tester is a device used to measure the adhesive bond strength between the glass and the interlayer in laminated glass. This test, often called the "pummel test" or "pummel adhesion test," is crucial for ensuring the quality and safety of laminated glass products used in various applications, including automotive and architectural settings.

A Pummel tester is a specialized device used to evaluate the adhesion strength between the interlayer and glass in laminated glass products. It's a crucial quality control tool in industries like architectural and automotive glass manufacturing.

Pummel Test :

It measures how well the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or other interlayer materials bond to the glass.

The test involves striking the laminated glass repeatedly (often with a hammer or automated impactor) after it's been chilled to around -18°C, then visually assessing how much interlayer remains attached.

Results are rated from 0 to 9 Pummel Units (PU):

-> 0 PU: Almost no adhesion (interlayer fully exposed)

-> 9 PU: Very strong adhesion (glass fragments remain bonded)

Purpose of the Test :

The main goal of the pummel test is to measure the relative bond strength, or "adhesion," between the glass and the interlayer material (such as PVB or ionoplast). This bond is critical for the laminated glass's performance, particularly its impact resistance and post-breakage behavior.

Low Adhesion: If the adhesion is too low, the laminated glass may delaminate, meaning the layers separate, which compromises its structural integrity and safety.

High Adhesion: If the adhesion is too high, it can lead to problems with impact failure, as the glass may not break and shatter in the desired, safe manner. The goal is to find an optimal range of adhesion.

The test procedure typically involves these steps :

Sample Preparation: A sample of laminated glass (often a specific size like 300x300mm) is prepared.

Conditioning: The sample is often cooled to a low temperature, such as -18°C (0°F), for a specified amount of time (e.g., 3 hours). This is done to make the interlayer more brittle, which aids in the testing process.

Pummeling: The cooled sample is placed on a holder and subjected to repeated blows from a hammer, often a flat-headed hammer of a specific weight (e.g., 0.5 kg).

Destruction: The hammering is continued until the glass on both sides of the interlayer is completely pulverized.

Evaluation: The test specimen is visually evaluated based on how well the glass fragments adhere to the interlayer. The amount of "bare film" (exposed interlayer with no glass fragments) is assessed.

Grading: A "Pummel value" is assigned to the sample, typically on a scale from 0 to 10. A value of 0 indicates very little adhesion (the interlayer is largely exposed), while a value of 10 represents very high adhesion (the interlayer is almost completely covered in glass fragments).

Tester Equipment:

While the test can be performed manually, automatic PUMMEL testers are available to ensure more consistent and repeatable results. These machines typically feature:

A pneumatic or mechanical hammer with adjustable speed and impact pressure.

An automatic positioning system for the glass sample.

A safety cover to contain glass fragments.

Standards and Specifications :

The pummel test is a recognized standard in the glass industry. Some of the key standards that govern the test include:

ASTM C1908 : "Standard Test Method for Pummel Adhesion Testing of Two-ply Laminated Architectural Glass." This standard outlines a qualitative test method for manually or semi-automatically testing and visually rating laminated glass.

EN 14449 : "Laminated glass and laminated safety glass - Evaluation of conformity/Product standard." This European standard also refers to the pummel test for evaluating the conformity of laminated glass products.

  • No.274 PUMMEL TESTER For Measuring the Pummel Value of PVB Film
  • This tester is for evaluating the bondage of PVB film fragments inside safety glass composites used for automobiles.
  • The glass is constantly impacted by hammer while moving in an S shape.
  • The specimen is then evaluated according to the Pummel value by the level of exposed PVB surface.
